Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s son, Mojtaba Khamenei, has expressed his desire to participate in his father’s multi-day farewell ceremony. However, due to security risks, a decision has not yet been made regarding which stages of the event he will be able to attend.
On Saturday (July 4), the American news outlet The New York Times reported, citing Iranian sources, that Mojtaba Khamenei informed authorities of his wish to participate in his father’s funeral. He specifically expressed his intention to be present at the burial ceremony scheduled for July 9.
Nevertheless, the report noted that his request has not yet been approved, owing to concerns about a potential Israeli attack and the risk of his location being compromised.
The New York Times further stated that Mojtaba Khamenei’s wife, teenage son, and other relatives were killed in a US-Israeli attack on the first day of the war. He was not present at a memorial event held last Wednesday in their honor. This absence has sparked questions about his current role and whereabouts.
Quoting Iranian officials, the report indicates that Mojtaba Khamenei is still being discouraged from appearing in public due to ongoing security threats.
